Swiss Bencic chose her training base at the EMPIRE Tennis Academy in Trnava

Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic (20), who is of Slovak origin, has been in training for one month at TC EMPIRE Trnava. The former world number 7 and winner of two WTA tournaments is preparing to return to the WTA circuit after surgery on her left wrist in May. She found the conditions at Trnava perfect for her training and became a member of the EMPIRE Trnava Tennis Academy.

Twenty years old Belinda Bencic, signed a one year contract with EMPIRE Trnava Tennis Academy in August, with a one year option. Whilst there were many options of where she could train, Bencic chose Trnava. There were many reasons for this. She cited being closer to family and friends as being major considerations when making this decision. She also received a recommendation from head-coach of the Academy, Vladimir Platenik.
"I have spoken to Vladimir Platenik and he told us to come and to try. I knew something about the Academy and that Daria Kasatkina is practising here. I know Oliver Nagy, my sparring partner for a long time. I was also interested because I was looking for a training base. With good conditions and a lot of players I can play with. Then it is easier for me to practise. I found it, plus my family is also here. I feel like being at home, that’s also very important for me," said Belinda Bencic for www.empire-tennis-academy.com She is also good friends with Platenik’s trainee Kasatkina.
"Daria said it is great that I came here. I am very pleased that we can see each other more often. We did not practise together yet, she needed more challenging trainings, and I'm not fully fit yet."

Belinda Bencic was born in Flawil in Switzerland but her parents are both Slovaks. Father Ivan is from Bratislava, whilst her mother Daniela’s parents are from Močenok near Trnava. "I certainly searched for some other places I could practise but it was just natural to decide for Trnava. I have my whole family, my grandma here, I keep on visiting them. They were very pleased to see me more often, since when I was playing tournaments we were rarely together. I can recompense them now," she said.

Belinda Bencic has been preparing in Trnava for a month already. "I've been doing fitness exercises before, but I'm practising for less than a month here. I like it very much here, I feel good here and I have super conditions and my own team, friends, and I'm starting to get to know other people," she explained.

Her team currently consists of Slovak tennis player and member of the Trnava club, Oliver Nagy and physiotherapist, Martin Dorn from Munich. The primary task of her team at this stage, is to put together a regime of training and strengthening exercises that will allow her to return to the WTA circuit in prime condition.

"It was not easy. We had to plan how to make a return after the surgery to keep my left wrist not overburdened. It was a tendon causing troubles that was not on its right place and this caused wrist inflammation. I tried to sort this out with my physiotherapist for a very long time, I did not want to undergo a surgery. I had to find out if there was no other way. Surgery was the last option, not complicated one, but regeneration takes a long time. I've been playing a lot of forehands since then, slices, now I'm starting with backhands. Currently, everything is ok, I hope it will continue like this," said Belinda Bencic , who intends to return to competitive tennis in the middle of September, 2017. She intends to continue her training at Trnava leading up to this.

"I do not know which tournament I start my return, let's keep it open. Overall, I'm on court for two or two and half an hour a day. I'm adding my stamina, in about 10 days I should be able to play even more tennis," she explained.

The opportunity of having a talented and prospective player like Belinda Bencic was welcomed by the chairman of TC EMPIRE Trnava, Mr. Miroslav Hlavna. "We are very pleased that Belinda has decided to be part of our Academy. Team of people working with here will provide all necessary support and conditions for quality preparation. Her operation with us will be great motivation for our young talented players. I wish Belinda a successful return and a new start with the support of EMPIRE Trnava Tennis Academy."

Belinda Bencic joins other Academy members, such as Daria Kasatkina of Russia, who is coached by Vladimir Platenik, Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, Lucie Safarova of Czech republic and Slovak talents Tereza Mihalikova and Rebecca Sramkova. The TC EMPIRE Trnava men’s squad includes Davis-cup players Andrej Martin and Igor Zelenay.
