Russian member of EMPIRE Tennis Academy Anna Blinkova, coached by Alexander Somogyi, was in China for the youth ITF Junior Masters, where eight best junior players, both boys and girls were playing.

Second edition of prestigious tournament was held from 8th to 10th April on hard courts in Sichuan International Tennis Centre in Chinese Chengdu Sichuan. Anna Blinkova was playing in China after problematic period influenced by injuries. After being successful in Germany and France in beginning of new season, she did not play for longer time, only to make a return last week in Croissy-Beauborg, losing against number two seed French Parmentier in two sets 0-6, 5-7. "Anna did not play for two weeks, because she was suffering from leg injury. She had problems with it since January. First match after some time was difficult for her, especially mentally. Draw did not make it easier, playing against number two seed. Surface was very fast and her experienced opponent used to be No. 40 in the WTA rankings. After bad first set, Anna improved her performance although it was not enough to win the match," said her coach Alexander Somogyi before the tournament

What were the expectations of her coach in China? "We expect victory. We are going into every match to win it. She is capable of winning with anyone. She is mentally strong. At the moment, we are working together on several details but also to make her feel more confident," described before the tournament Alexander Somogyi

Anna Blinkova faced in the first round to Usue Arconada, she won 6-3, 6-3. She beat 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 also the next semifinal opponent Kayla Day from the USA. Anna Blinkova is the 2016 ITF Junior Masters winner after downing Katie Swan 64 67(1) 76(4) in a superb match. She fires off a backhand winner on match point before her legs give way in relief.

“This is the best day of my life so far,” said a beaming Blinkova after a match which enthralled the thousands of fans in attendance at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre. The Russian takes home $15,000 worth of travel grants and a selection of wild cards into WTA events which will undoubtedly help on her journey into the professional ranks. “After the second set I went to the bathroom,” Blinkova explained in her post-match press conference. “I just washed my face and with this movement I got rid of all the negative thoughts and all the negative emotions. I told myself ‘you will win, you can win, just believe and fight for every point’. That is what I thought when I went to the bathroom.”

“I can’t describe my feelings,” she said. “It’s amazing. It was an extremely tough match, very nervous and full of winners and unforced errors. But finally I did it and I feel incredible,” she added for the itftennis.com.
