Kasatkina beat Konjuh & Schmiedlova to make Australian Open Round 3, lost to Serena Williams

Daria Kasatkina, Australian Open 2016

Member of EMPIRE Tennis Academy in Trnava Daria Kasatkina had a successful entry into her first ever main draw Australian Open, beating Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (WTA No. 29) and Ana Konjuh from Croatia (No. 87), both in two sets.

It was their first head to head match (against Schmiedlova), with very special taste for Slovakian tennis fans. "We are satisfied with the preparations before the tournament. We did our best. About the draw - it does not really matter from which country comes the opponent - it is only coincidence. Daria plays against Slovakian - Schmiedlova is a great player. I hope Daria can play her best tennis to go through," said Kasatkina‘s coach Vladimir Platenik after the draw.

Daria Kasatkina made a fantastic first round, beating the Slovakian favourite in two sets 6-3, 6-3 and will play the Round 2 against Ana Konjuh from Croatia! "Daria played very responsibly, mentally was really strong. I am happy to see improvements in her game.  We worked mainly on her offence and it paid off," said Vladimir Platenik after her win.

Ana Konjuh was the second round opponent for Daria Kasatkina who she beat in two sets 6-4, 6-3. “It was difficult; we had complications from the early morning. Car did not lift us up and we were 45 minutes late for the warm up. Luckily it was raining, so we made it, but it did not add up to the mood before the match. Daria started nervously, but she tackled the match well in second set. Her fighting spirit and determination won the match for her, she was more solid and consistent,“ said Vladimir Platenik about the second round win and added couple of interesting facts before the third round. Kasatkina had the most difficult draw possible, playing World Number one and last year’ s champion Serena Williams. “It is the most difficult draw for Daria, but we will do our best to fight for the next round. It is important for Daria not to be afraid of her name and play her optimum. Conditions are not easy, Serena had the opportunity to prepare at the show court right before and during the tournament. Daria was playing at the smaller courts, which are faster and overall, players needs to get used to the conditions at the big court. On the other side, fans and atmosphere can boost Daria and the performance, so we will try and get the most of it,” said coach before third round match.

Next opponent was world No. 1 and the Australian Open 2015 singles winner Serena Williams to which Daria Kasatkina lost 1-6, 1-6. “Daria was really looking forward the match. It was a big lesson for her. Unfortunately, she did not play her best tennis, and Serena played fantastic game. Daria did great amount of work, but miracles do not happen every day. Today it was Serena’s day. She was 80 % on her first serve and were as fast as 170 km per hour. Nothing we can do, but I am glad, Daria takes it well and she sees room for improvement herself. Tomorrow we are playing doubles, we want to take some points into the ranking. I am sure, doubles can help improve the singles performances as well,” added Vladimir Platenik
