Andrej Martin, Karol Beck, Rio, challenger

Member of EMPIRE Tennis Academy Andrej Martin moved to Brazilian Rio de Janeiro following tournament in Argentinian Buenos Aires, together with his coach on tour Karol Beck.

Challenger named Vivo Tennis Cup, with total prize money of 50000 USD was played on red clay in Brazilian Rio. In the opening round, eight seed Andrej Martin had to battle against the No. 148 ATP ranked home player Joao Souza. Slovakian player convincingly beat him after two straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to meet Argentinian Guido Andreozzi in the second round. Head to head reads 1-1 after their match up in Rio, Andrej Martin winning in three sets, after losing the first one, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Andrej Martin was down 2-6, 1-4 and also 2-6, 6-4, 2-5 but he made a stunning comeback in the third set to deny opponent’ s match point to advance into the quarterfinal.

“Regarding the second round match, big nerves for my new coach Karol Beck from EMPIRE Tennis Academy, he is not yet aware of my come backs like this one. I am extremely pleased, I managed to fight against the result and win the match. I changed my attitude from the first round of this tournament. This is a good sign; I am on the right track. I started to create less pressure on myself and be more relaxed. So I was not as nervous perhaps as my coach at the stands, and that was decisive,“ said Andrej Martin post-match from Rio de Janeiro.

Andrej Martin played the quarterfinal against home player Giulhermo Clezaro, No. 183 in the ATP Rankings. It was their first head to head match, and Brazilian player won it in two sets 6-2, 7-5.
