Qualifier Blinkova wins ITF tournament in Germany both in singles and doubles

Anna Blinkova, ITF tournament, Germany, Stuttgart

Russian Anna Blinkova, former junior world number three in singles and last year’ s finalist of junior Wimbledon, left for Germany together with her coach Alexander Somogyi from TC EMPIRE Trnava. And she did very well, to take both titles, her best performance so far in her career amongst women.

Stuttgart-Stammheim was the venue for 10K women’ s ITF tournament played under the name Internationale Württembergische Hallenmeisterschaften. Anna Blinkova played in the qualies. Fourth seed and No. 744 in WTA rankings, Anna Blinkova was successful in the opening round winning 6-1, 6-3 against home player Juliana Triebe. In the second final round of the qualies, she played again against home player – Katherine Gerlach and she did very well to beat her in straight forward two sets 6-3, 6-0.

In the first round of then main draw, Anna played Swiss qualifier Nina Stadler and Blinkova advanced to the second round easily beating her opponent in two sets 6-2, 6-2. “Anna makes her way into the women’ s tennis. She is very disciplined in training and matches. She performs very well so far in Germany, both in qualies and in the first round, she was very convincing. She had slow beginning of the first round match against the Swiss player, she was loosing 0-2, but then she started playing her aggressive tennis. That’ s her biggest weapon. After that, she started to chase her opponent on the court, scoring winners. She plays against another qualifier in the second round, Gervais. We have to be careful, as she has beaten the number one seed Jakupovic, No. 233 in the WTA rankings,” said coach Somogyi for www.empire-tennis-academy.com website.

In 2nd round, Russian player met another qualifier, French player Julia Gervais, No. 774 player in the WTA rankings. She dominated the match in two sets 6-2, 6-2. Match lasted only 64 minutes. In quarterfinals, Blinkova played against another qualifier, this time home player, No. 520 in the WTA rankings, Katharina Hobgarski. It was more difficult win for Blinkova, than her fist matches, but she triumphed in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. It was her first semi-final since started playing women’s tournaments. “It was very difficult match. Her opponent asked for medical time out in the second set and Anna lost her concentration. She made a break in the third set to take the lead 5-3, and finished the match on serve,“ said happily Alexander Somogyi. Anna Blinkova advanced into the singles final after beating her doubles partner. “Anna played very concentrated in the semi-final, maybe her best match in the tournament. There was no chance for her opponent,” added Somogyi after her triumph.

Russian player completed her dominant display in Germany in the final match as well, and beat seventh seed from Greece Valentina Grammatikopolou to take her first women‘s singles ITF title, her biggest career success so far. “Final was very dramatic. First set was very tiring, but Anna prevailed at the end. She lost her concentration during the second set for a while, she was down 0-2 in the third, but then she improved her game and beat her opponent after winning six games in a row. Anna fought hard to take both titles,” commented on her win satisfied coach Somogyi.

Together with Maria Marfutina, Russian duo also took the doubles title on Saturday.
