Wimbledon: Belinda Bencic sends Caroline Garcia packing in straight sets and then won against Riske & Suarez

Belinda Bencic put together an outstanding performance to earn her first top-10 win since January, defeating world number six Caroline Garcia in the opening round of Wimbledon. She beat also Alison Riske from the USA and Suarez-Navarro from Spain and advanced to the fourth round of the Wimbledon 2018.

When the Wimbledon draw came out, this was one of the few blockbuster first-round matches to keep a lookout for. It lived up to the hype it received as Belinda Bencic and Caroline Garcia brought together a high-quality encounter which went the way of the Swiss underdog, who triumphed with an excellent 7-6, 6-2 scoreline after 93 minutes of play. This is Bencic’s second top-10 win of the year, and coincidentally both came in the first round of Grand Slams.

Both Belinda Bencic and Garcia ended the match with positive numbers on the statistical board, though Garcia’s huge bulk of 24 unforced errors proved costly especially during the crucial moments as just one service break proved the difference between both players overall. Belinda Bencic, looking in great form, will now face Alison Riske in a tricky second-round match with a decent chance to make the second week.

The former world No. 7 injury troubles didn't disappear with the start of the new season. In March, she dealt with a pre-stress fracture in her foot, playing just three events after Indian Wells (Roland Garros, 's-Hertogenbosh and an ITF in Ilkey). In Ilkey, just before coming to the All England Club, she retired while down, 6-2, 2-0. Her record going into Wimbledon (including two Fed Cup losses) was 4-8.

"My confidence cannot be, like, amazing but I think it was good. I was practicing good this week," Belinda Bencic said in London. "I'm feeling my game coming better and better. In Paris it was, like, zero from 100, you know. And 's-Hertogenbosch got better and then I got more confidence."
