Elina Svitolina from EMPIRE Tennis Academy beats Wozniacki 6-4, 6-0 for Rogers title

Elina Svitolina defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-0 to win the Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament on Sunday. It was Svitolina's fifth WTA Tour title of the season.

The 22-year-old Ukrainian used powerful groundstrokes and a big serve to keep the sixth-ranked Wozniacki off balance. A break at love at 4-4 gave the fifth-ranked Elina Svitolina the edge in the first set. She wasn't threatened again in the 77-minute match.

Elina Svitolina had a clear edge from the baseline thanks to her impressive retrieving ability. Wozniacki was forced to go for more winners and started making more unforced errors as a result. Wozniacki, a 27-year-old former world No. 1 from Denmark, varied her shots throughout the match, combining power with more looping topspin returns. Svitolina wasn't fazed as her consistency and power game proved to be too much. It was Elina Svitolina's fourth victory over a top-10 opponent this week and third win in two days. She beat ninth-ranked Venus Williams in the third round, topped No. 4 Garbine Muguruza in a rain-delayed quarterfinal Saturday morning and downed No. 2 Simona Halep on Saturday night.

With this week in Toronto, she has earned wins over pretty much everyone in the Top 10: Pliskova, Halep, Kerber, Muguruza, and Wozniacki - how much confidence does it give going into these big tournaments knowing that there’s no one she can’t beat? "It brings lots of confidence, and I’m very happy with my year. I’m doing a good job, but there’s still lots of things that I need to improve, and I’m always looking for something I can improve on or learn each day. That’s why I have my team to keep me on the ground."

It was Elina Svitolina's third Premier 5 title of the year. "It’s amazing to be No.4 in the world now. I’m just one spot away from beating Andrei Medvedev, which has been one of my goals, to become the highest-ever ranked Ukrainian. I’m very motivated, and hopefully I can make it this year. It’s very special, the Ukrainian support, and I really appreciate it."
